Northport High School students recently participated in the Eastern Long Island Regional Science Olympiads competition at Hauppauge High School on Feb. 1.

Following weeks of preparation and planning, and with guidance from advisors Bryan Horan, Edward Moloney and Courtney DeBrino, students earned 13th place among 52 teams in the competition.

Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events, which reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, the competition encourages students to work and communicate collaboratively in active, hands-on STEM challenges. Events range from pencil and paper tests, to laboratory-based practicals, to engineering design events where students build devices, which are then evaluated during the competition.

The Science Olympiad teams at East-Northport and Northport Middle Schools continue to prepare for their competition scheduled for Feb. 29 at Candlewood Middle School in Dix Hills. “All the best to these young scientists and engineers,” District Chairperson of Science, Technology and Engineering Education David Storch said.
