Serving Those in Need One Bowl at a Time

About 300 school and community members recently gathered at Northport High School’s fifth annual Empty Bowls fundraiser, raising approximately $4,800 to benefit the Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry of Northport-East Northport. The soup-dinner event was organized by Northport High School’s Art Club and club adviser Linda Johansen in an effort to help more than 160 families in the community.

For the price of a $10 ticket, guests were served a soup and salad dinner and were asked to select a one-of-a-kind handmade ceramic bowl from the over 400 bowls made by Northport art students for the event. The bowls were a collaborative effort made by the Northport High School Art club, Crafts and Ceramic Classes of Mr. Gutheil and Ms. Wolf and also Ms. Lacausi's Northport Middle School Art Club. Some community members also took part in creating bowls prior to the event. The bowls were taken home by guests as a reminder of all of the empty bowls in the world.

Special guest Suffolk County Legislator William Spencer also attended the fundraiser and Altice Connects presented a $1,000 donation to Ecumenical Lay Council Chairperson Donna Galluccio on behalf of Johansen and the Northport High School students.

Entertainment was also provided throughout the evening from high school students and included singers, a comedian and a band.
