Congratulations to Northport High School varsity girls basketball coach Richard Castellano, who will be inducted into the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Hall of Fame this July in Clayton, New York!

Castellano began coaching girls varsity basketball at the high school in 1979 and has obtained up to 613 wins, 21 League titles, 10 County Championships, five Long Island Championships and made the NYSPHSAA State Semifinals three times. He was also inducted into the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY) Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame the same year. He was recognized on several occasions for his coaching skills including being named Newsday’s “Coach of the Year” four times, NY Daily News “Coach of the Year” twice and was honored as “BCANY Section Coach of the Year.”

In addition to coaching, Castellano takes pride in his community. He created the Suffolk County Coaches vs. Cancer/Score for a Cure Fundraiser, which is a program that 95 percent of schools in Suffolk County currently participate in. During Richards’s 22-years as President of SCWBCA, he awarded over $250,000 to basketball players for camps and college scholarships.

“I am honored and humbled to be inducted into the NYS Hall of Fame,” said Castellano. “I have had hundreds of outstanding student-athletes who have played for me in my career and they are the reason for our successes. I have had a great coaching staff at every level of our basketball program that have also contributed to the Northport HS Lady Tiger Pride.”

Castellano thanked the entire Northport-East Northport community for always supporting the Lady Tigers for every one of his 38 years on the court.
