On June 11 and 12, Northport Middle School students who are members of
the NMS Ambassadors and Community Service Clubs worked together to
create a “Field of Flags” by driving flags into the school’s front lawn.
Members of the community and other groups of students also visited to
help plant the flags—5,000 in total.
Each flag represented the donations of school and community members
towards the Christopher G. Scherer Memorial, which helps purchase
service dogs for veterans. Since this event’s inception, Northport
Middle has helped fund eleven service dogs. This organization was
founded in loving memory of Christopher Scherer, who served in the
military, and as a child attended Northport Middle School. He holds a
special place in many community members’ hearts.
“This community is like a family,” said Mrs. Conroy-Terry, who is one of
the NMS Ambassadors facilitators, and was also one of Christopher’s
teachers. “We want to show our students what it means to give of
ourselves in order to make a difference in the lives of those around us.
It’s that simple.”
