Students at Dickinson Avenue take STEM to new heights

Third graders at Dickinson Avenue Elementary School experimented with some Halloween-themed STEM activities on Oct. 28.

Teachers, Nicole Neems and Nick Sperduti, set up three stations for students to visit, each consisting of a different challenge that was designed to test their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. 

The first challenge was candy corn bottle flipping, where students had three bottles, each filled with varying amounts of candy corn, and recorded how many times each one landed vertically on the table after being flipped in the air. 

At the second station, students were tasked with creating a pumpkin stand out of straws and tape. Their stand had to support the weight of their pumpkin so that it didn’t touch the ground.

The last challenge was a pumpkin catapult, where students used six rubber bands, 10 popsicle sticks and a single plastic spoon to launch a candy pumpkin in the air.
