Request for Transportation to Non-Public Schools
One of the major concerns parents have is length of time of the school bus route to some of the private and parochial schools to which we transport. Parents should understand that given the traffic problems on Long Island and the fact that students attending these schools may be scattered across the district, it is not uncommon for bus routes to be an 1 1/4 hours to 1 1/2 hours long.
As required by New York State Law, the District provides transportation to the the private schools within the district (i.e. Trinity Regional School and Long Island Lutheran at St. Paul’s Elementary School) comparable to transportation to District schools, and to District residents who attend non-public schools outside the district.
Requests for transportation to non-public schools must be filed in writing with the Northport-East Northport Board of Education by April 1, prior to school year. Parents are advised to file even if admission to the non-public school is still in question. To qualify for transportation, the school must be no further than 15 miles from the student’s home. An application is late if it is filed after April 1, or if filed more than 30 days after establishing residence in the Northport-East Northport UFSD. In this event, Part B of the application must be completed by the parent/guardian providing a reasonable explanation for the delay as required by Chapter 3635 of the Education Law as amended. Chapter 3635 requires transportation be provided if there is a reasonable explanation for the delayed request, provided sufficient funds are available in the school district budget.
All new entrants and Kindergarten students must be registered in the Northport-East Northport School District and show proof of birth and residency. Please call 262-6660 for more information.
Late buses are provided for students in 6th through 12th grade on an as needed basis. If a late bus is needed please contact Transportation by 10 a.m. that day to arrange for a late bus for your student.
A FORMAL APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED ANNUALLY.
