On Jan. 6, students from Northport High School’s double-accelerated math classes conducted math research presentations in preparation for the 2020 Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair on May 1 at Hofstra University.

Students discussed topics ranging from “math in scuba diving” to “probability and statistics in sports,” and received feedback from students and teacher judges.

On May 1, the students will compete against students from across Nassau and Suffolk counties for a chance to win bronze, silver or gold medals as well as the prestigious Alice Griswold Award.

The Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair is sponsored by the Nassau County Association of Mathematics Supervisors and offers students the opportunity to explore topics outside of the traditional required mathematics courses.
