Northport High School junior and wrestling champion Matt Marlow took home the prestigious first place award in the 118-pound weight class at the Eastern States Wrestling Classic on Sunday, January 15.

Matt pinned his opponent from Saranac in 3:17 to win the title and had wins of 18-2, 17-2, 11-1, 6-1 and a 2nd period pin leading up to the finals. In his six matches, Marlow did not surrender a single offensive point to any of his opponents. Not only was Matt named Northport High School’s first wrestling New York State champion last year, but he is now Northport’s first wrestler to be crowned champion at this regional event. He also took home the Section XI League 3 title as well.

The Eastern States Wrestling Classic took place at Sullivan Community College and brought together the best wrestlers from several states across the Northeast. Students must be invited to attend based on their record.

Matt is coached by Northport High School’s Thad Alberti and his father, Andrew Marlow.

“His winning this tournament is an incredible accomplishment.  This is considered one of the most difficult tournaments in the area in season.  To win it in such a dominant fashion shows how Matt's year-round hard work and dedication are paying off,” said Coach Alberti.

Coach Marlow added “he was sharp over the entire two-day competition and handled everything anybody threw at him.”

Coach Marlow also shared that Matt is grateful for the opportunity to compete against his fellow top wrestlers.
