Two special Northport High School students were recognized at the monthly board of education meeting on Nov. 21 for their continued academic excellence. Ms. Jennifer Nesfield, the district chairperson for world languages and ENL, introduced Jazmin Hernandez as English Language Learner Student of the Month and Kate Hecker as World Languages Department Student of the Month.
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Jazmin for three years at Northport High School,” Nesfield said. “She’s really a phenomenal young lady. She’s one of the hardest workers I have ever met.”
After coming to the United States three years ago, Hernandez has done so well that she’s currently enrolled in college-level courses. She said she’s “learned a lot” since coming to this country, and she looks forward to becoming a teacher and helping others in the future.
On her own, Hecker has mastered the German language on top of the impressive accomplishments she’s attained while attending Northport High School. In the future, she wants to study abroad and ultimately become part of the EU or the UN. Hecker added that these language classes are “the ones I’ve always enjoyed the most.”
“Kate is one of the most phenomenal world languages students I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with,” Nesfield said. “Kate is one of those rare students I come across who has mastered four languages. She’s also the first student in my time here who has simultaneously taken the IB program in both Italian and French.”
