Northport High School’s Friends of the Greenhouse are doing their part to help the declining populations of monarch butterflies.
On Nov. 6, the club’s adviser, Janet Byler, set up shop in her classroom where students used a scalpel to “nick” the seeds of native plants to increase their propagation of milkweed. Ms. Byler explained that milkweed is the monarchs favorite and only food source as caterpillars.
The group’s goal is to grow more than 50 seedlings in the greenhouse during the winter and plant them around the community in May. In preparation, the students prepped the exterior gardens near the greenhouse for winter.
