Congratulations to Northport High School senior Madeleine Corrigan for earning the distinction of English Student of the Month.

The aspiring writer was recognized by the board of education at its meeting on Dec. 12, where Patricia Schmitt, the district’s English department chairperson, shared a video with the community, detailing Maddie’s accomplishments and plans for the future.

Maddie has been writing since elementary school. During the video, she recalled writing her mom poems for her birthday, short stories and memoirs. She even shared a short excerpt from a memoir that she wrote after her family took as trip to Iceland in search of the “elusive” northern lights.

Since her freshman year at Northport High School, she has been an active member of the school’s art literary magazine, The Amaranth, where she has served as editor for the past two years.

After graduation, Maddie intends to pursue a double major in international relations and music. Throughout her high school career, she has played the cello as a member of the Symphonic Band and also serves as the ensemble’s president.

“I was really excited that I was chosen to be the English Student of the Month because writing has always been a passion of mine,” she said.
