During a ceremony on March 21, 65 committed Northport High School students were inducted into the newly established Social Studies Honor Society. The recognized students were selected based on the four guiding principles of veritas (truth), scientia (knowledge), sapienta (wisdom) and officium (service) as well as superior academic performance in social studies classes, participation in school or community service and excellent academic habits and personal character based on teacher recommendation.
The ceremony was presided over by District Chairperson of Social Studies Sean Hurley and social studies teachers and chapter advisors Claire Moore and Nicholas Cerda.  Principal Rob Dennis gave opening remarks and students Emily Maloney, Grace Sewell, Mairead Carroll and Griffin Schluter, who were active in the formation of the chapter, also participated in the ceremony.
Rho Kappa is the National Social Studies Honor Society overseen by the National Council for the Social Studies. Rho literally translates to “head” and Kappa is derived from “kapf” which means “palm of the hand.” We feel that the focus on both the head and the hand symbolizes our firm belief in Northport High School that knowledge without service to our community is at best, incomplete.
Congratulations, inductees!
