ENMS Fifth Graders Experience Immigration Simulation

ENMS(2).png thumbnail216644
East Northport Middle School fifth graders got to experience a simulation of what many of their ancestors endured when entering the United States. The interactive experience was designed to mimic Ellis Island in the early 1900's and was the final culmination of the students’ unit on immigration in America.

Many students researched members of their own family for the event, choosing an older member of their family tree. The simulation involved students participating in a series of stations similar to what immigrants would have actually experienced in the early 1900’s. This included a simulated health and fitness exam, a “character station” and more.

Many students expressed pride while explaining their heritage and others noted that they were surprised at how long and difficult the immigration process was.  Students who successfully “entered America” were excited to have made it through the process.
