English language learners across all seven Northport-East Northport School District schools who tested at a commanding level on their NYSELAT exam enjoyed a “graduation” from the program on November 21. 25 students ranging from kindergarten through twelfth grade exhibited proficiency in English on the exam, showing they no longer require ELL specific courses.

During the ceremony, keynote speakers Jonathan Leon Brizuela, a seventh grader at Northport Middle School and Nicole Barrientos, a senior at Northport High School, addressed their peers and congratulated them on this accomplishment.

All ELLs take the NYSELAT exam in the spring. When results are received in September, students who have tested at the commanding level are considered graduates of the program.

Chairperson of World Language and ENL Jennifer Nesfield said “These students have worked incredibly hard under difficult circumstances and we are so, so proud of them. They approach every day as an opportunity to learn and grow, and their hard work has paid off with this achievement. We can’t wait to see what they accomplish next.”
