Northport High School senior Faith Hoerning drew upon personal experiences and emotions to craft three pieces of art, earning first place and a $750 scholarship at the SCALA All County Senior Scholarship Show. Each piece was created in her Advanced Placement Drawing class under the direction of teacher Anthony Klinger-Cooley.
Faith’s pieces were done in colored pencils and are intended to illustrate her emotions. “I tried to put a lot of depth and a lot of feeling into them,” she said. One of the pieces, an image of a heart shaped balloon sitting on a teenager’s bed, was drawn from an experience of her brother leaving for college and then welcoming him home during a school break.
Faith’s work was recognized amongst others from across the county. Her works are displayed at the Old Babylon Town Hall, where the Senior Scholarship Show was held.
Faith has plans to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in college and is considering a career in art education. “I’ve been doing art for as long as I can remember, but I never knew the amount I could take it to and this class really showed me what was possible,” she said.
