“Boom,” the reenacted sound of cannon fire floated through the Northport Middle School athletic fields on Nov. 7 as students learned the proper technique for loading a cannon.

Led by members of the Revolutionary War reenactment group, Boots and Saddles, social studies classes rotated between five stations behind the school where they learned about the different facets of the Revolutionary War, ranging from artillery to material culture and everyday instruments to attire worn on the battlefield.

Additionally, the students learned about different aspects of the war, including the Brittish Cavalry, or the “Dragoons,” and the “Scottish Highlanders.” The reenactors, dressed as both loyalists and patriots, explained both sides of the war to students who enjoyed the hands-on learning experience.
