Northport High School Electrathon Team #21 demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication at the CT Electrathon Challenge on Friday, May 17. The team competed against teams from across the region and as far north as Canada. Northport High School’s team showcased their innovative electric vehicle, which combines cutting-edge technology with sustainable engineering. In its inaugural year, Electrathon Team #21 earned third place in the Novice Vehicle Class with 31 race cars at the event.

The CT Electrathon Challenge, an annual event that promotes environmental awareness and engineering prowess, challenges high school teams to design, build and race electric vehicles. The event emphasizes efficiency, design ingenuity and sustainability, making it a perfect platform for aspiring engineers and environmental advocates. Ed Moloney, Northport High School Electrathon faculty adviser, encouraged a team effort as students worked to create an electric-powered vehicle that can travel as far as possible on a closed-circuit course for one hour, using limited electrical supply.

“We are incredibly proud of our students and their achievements,” said David Storch, district chairperson of science, technology and engineering education. “Their hard work, ingenuity and teamwork truly shone through at the CT Electrathon Challenge. This experience has not only enhanced their engineering skills but also their understanding of sustainable practices, which are crucial for the future.”

The team’s race car drivers, Andrew Mead and Ben Abbass, sophomores at Northport High School, expressed their excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to compete. “Participating in the Electrathon Challenge has been an amazing experience for all of us,” they said. “It has been a journey of learning, collaboration and innovation. We’re thankful for the support from Mr. Moloney, our school and our community.”

Northport High School’s Electrathon Team #21 is sponsored by the Long Island Technology and Engineering Educators Association and the generous donation of the Mead family, as well as the school’s STEM program, which provides students with hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The team’s success at the CT Electrathon Challenge is a testament to the school’s commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and sustainability.
